Octane Boost

Postby WR1 Bro » Wed Jun 15, 2005 8:18 am

Does it have any detrimental effect on the engine? Or, is it beneficial?

Don't be daft. Just want to know peoples opinion. I know certain imports require it and I'm sure someone on here can educate us as to the pros/cons etc.

It was you and Woza talking about different brands that prompted the question. I thought a little more info would be nice.

It is beneficial.
It meas the fuel has a higher RON so burns more efficiently, allowing the ECU to advance the timing therefore slightly more power.

I used to run octane booster in my imported STi V Type R. For the first year I used Millers, it came in a hand size bottle that was exactly the right amount for a tank fillup from an already quarter full tank. After about a year when it was serviced the mechanic asked what the hell I'd been putting in the car !!
The plugs were all gunged up orange. He suggested I change to the Pro-Boost, can't remeber who makes it. The next service came along with no gunge :)

The car definitly needs booster otherwise it felt really rough.

I was thinking the same thing after sunday. Some garages say that they buy better fuel than others, one garage claims that there normal( 95 ?) ron is nearly as good as optimax.

Maybe you should turn up with a test tube and perform some tests before filling your tank?

So, which is the best octance enhancement treatment. Opinions and web addresses would be good. I guess this will need to be taken into account at the RR day when trying to compare figures with Prodrive?

Twice as clued up? I know nothing...

Someone on here will have some useful information I'm sure.

Aside (off thread... but I did start the thread so all put the rules animation somewhere warm and moist)

Your hardly going to get any "useful" figures if you have added octatane treatment in.
On the comment about Millers and gunged up plugs, I used to work for a company that always said that they reclaimed oil, and they did empty our waste tanks,

I didn't say I had any knowledge about it

I have used Silkolene Pro-Boost and NF.
I only ever have it as back up incase I can't buy Optimax at some time.
I don't use it as some people do to run a more aggressive map for power.

You pays your money and takes your choice.
If you want it solely for power- forget it.
If you want it incase of emergencies then either of the 2 I have mentioned above will be fine.

TSL in Nottingham stock Pro-Boost. 01159 377200
Roger Clark Motorsport stock NF. 01455 828610

I'd stay away from it, especially on a turbo engine that can run pretty hot.

When I worked as consultant in the oil industry, I liked to follow what the guys were doing in product development. I've never heard any of the tests they did on such additives actually giving good results.
Power could indeed increase, but always at the expense of the engine.
