Motorola A1000. (Approx $500, flagship Motorola in fact)

It's a 3G phone, GPS, palm pilot and it got bluetooth.

Very practical as you don't need to install any car kit or GPS into your car. Just get a holder so you can put it somewhere where you can see the screen when you use it as Satnav.
Use a bluetooth headset or an HF800 wireless speaker (0.5 inch by 1 inch, clips on the sunvisor) to avoid the need for a car kit...

I got a younger. As useless as SatNav though. Not really expensive (I married a sientist...) but it makes all types on unwanted, speedrelated noises in the car.

Not quite as neat as a built in system though.

That's pretty obvious, Bro !

Built-in is always neater and gives better quality. But when money is no objection, you can always get something better, nicer, etc. He asked for the cheapest SatNav available though...

I don't want to fork out for a built-in system either as the scoob is a lease car and it's only used as second car of the household. Hence why I like the idea of having a widescreen bluetooth phone with GPS. Avoids any installation but still gives a car kit and GPS.

Been tempted by the Pioneer AVIC-X1r though. It is said to have a built-in G and accelero-meter... :woohoo:

Just pointing out a MINOR downside.....

Let us know what finally tempts you as it will loudly shout to the rest of us what is thus the wrong option!

tom tom has to be right up there.

But in anycase I use the AA route master website which gives detailed directions to anywhere I need to go. On my first trip to Crossroads to sign the contract on my car I didn't get lost once ... and that place is in the middle of nowhere!

:off:

Fortunately, most of us have more common sense than money :finger:

Heard good things about the Tom tom. Does it do anything else than GPS (i.e. built-in phone,...)

Anybody seen or tried any other "phone-GPS" combinations (i.e. built-in GPS chip, not an external accessory. I don't like things flying around in the car) ?
The only thing the Moto A1000 still needs is to be Windows enabled and have a slot for a mini-SD so you can watch movies on it. (256Mb card could give you 4 hours of movie !)

I use Tom Tom Go. It has a few issues but generally it is a good system for the money. You can't rely on it entirely as you need to use common sense too. At the end of the day it is a tool. A bit like Ray is a tool!

if I was to buy a satnav I wouldn't want it to do anything other than talk and tell me where I'm going. Hence why I like the Tom Tom - plus you can mount it right in your field of vision and not have to butcher up your sterio system.

TVs and stuff IMO are a waste of time because I'm more interesting in driving the car, and am usually going too fast to look down anyway. Got a 40inch badboy at home for DVDs and TV!

Why can't you rely on it entirely ?

PS: Bro, you are dissappointing me. I would have thought every car you have has a neat built-in system

:toofunny:

Sorry mate, you started the offense at 10:51am today. I was just nicely behaving (for once).

Anyway, is the Tom Tom problem one of the system not being able to always position the car correctly, or are the maps just cr@p?

I found the Satnav in the Merc pretty good until I got the map of Scandinavia in it. The guys who made that should have stayed away of the Koskenkorva 60' !

If you think 10:51am was me on the offensive then you are sadly mistaken my Swedish friend!

Tom Tom Go - can try and send you the wrong way up a one way street. Some road islands are not on the map. However, cross checking the display with the highlighted road on the display makes it pretty obvious which way to go.

I don't believe Tom Tom GO has any problem positioning its whereabouts. Not that I have noticed anyway. Please note that my experience is not of the latest Tom Tom Go which I assume will have been updated.
