changing number plate

Postby danr55 » Tue Jun 20, 2006 11:00 am

how much time and effort to take over a number plate, and have it registered to your vehicle ?!

So far:

Bought the number plate
Guy sent me the retention document
filled in document to add myself as nominee - sent to dvla swansea
waited 2 weeks
got the document back - now i'm named on there
sent the document back to the guy so he could sign the new one allowing me to register to my vehicle.
he signed it, sent it back
took this to local dvla office so they could do all sorts of sh1t, give me a new tax disc, give me an envelope to send old tax disc back, give me a certificate to take to someone to make up the plates etc
now, have to take this new certificate, along with two forms of ID, v5 reg doc, birth certificate, inside leg measurement, certificates from school, 14 witnesses etc to a place to have the plates made and put on the car.

Is it just me - or does this seem like a ridiculous process ? :?

It is a long winded process. You could have speeded it up by taking the documents to your local DVLA office when you were adding yourself as a nominee.

Now the plate is in your name the process is a lot simpler. If you intend selling your car private then make sure to apply to put the plate on retention a good two months before you intend selling it. It is ok if you are selling a car to a "understanding" friend ( Martin) as they let you get on with sorting out the plate after they have taken delivery of the car.

In short, YES the DVLA are a pain up the arse.

I'm not sure if that is correct or not as the Local Office will supply the retention document. Obviously they can not supply a change of name to the retention doc.

Oh well, all sorted now.

Nice price, Dan. Don't blame you at all for going through the hassle to get it on the car. I nearly had one of the WRC plates Jon Mathers had but just couldn't justify the cost.

you and me both mate, I nearly took W121 WRC - which poesy saw recently, would have been a great plate for the car. I wasn't looking for a plate, just happened across this ones by accident and thought it seemed a very good price, paid

I changed the car and got the dealer to put the private plate on the new car.
