Rust around the windscreen

Sorry, I've not posted for a long time but I thought I should make you all aware of this and any suggestions are welcome.

Due to a crack in my windscreen I had to get a replacement about a month ago, upon removal of the old screen the guy from Autoglass noticed rust all the way along the roof line behind the rubber and it has now started blistering outside of the rubber. As soon as I found out I made my local dealer aware of this and they arranged for the area manager to take a look, he took some pictures and reported to warranties who have subsequently turned round and said that they are unable to do anything as the car is too old. It may be the case that its outside of the 3 year paintwork warranty but how was I supposed to know there was an issue if the problems been hidden behind the rubber.

Rant over and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Philip

I thought anti corrosion was a 6 year deal?

these anti corrosion warrantys only apply if you keep the the anti corrosion serving. which no one dose.

3 years for paintwork and 12 years for corrosion as long as the corrosion is below the window line (seems like they saw this one coming) and has worked itself from the inside out. My last car was a 10 year old integrale which being Italian is obviously renowned for rust; not a spot on it.

i too have rust around my windscreen and my boot where the seals seem to have trapped the water... i went to my local dealership who got a guy from head office to come and view the car after taking and emailing pics around. i have kept up my warranty with the paintwork and argued it out with them. they said it applies only to rust in the middle of panels and not around the edges. load of BS if you ask me. how do you stop it spreading?

Get to it and treat it asap.

You can get that liquid stuff that chemically stops it, but depending on how bad yours is, you may need to sand it back to uncover it all first...

not a nice thing to do...but better it done now than leave it to spread.

I take it this was its first windscreen change? I've seen a few cars where they've had a new screen and the fitter has scratched all the way along the roof line with their cutting tools and this can be enough to let rust to start appearing...

I'm the second owner and bought my car with about 1,500 miles on the clock and have only had the screen replaced once (2 months ago), I also checked with the first owner who confirmed that he never replaced the screen.

"twonk"... brilliant!!

I noticed that I have rust around the windscreen when washing last weekend, right above the rubber, never looked that closely before!!

Clark: Would you recommend a respray? If so, would it be a good idea to get the whole roof done at once? (I imagine that only doing the around the window would not be that different from the whole roof once you get going??)

How good was the paint match when you had yours resprayed recently? I'm dubious about matching paint :?

Also, I created 2 slight swirl marks removing bird poo from the bonnet last weekend. How would you go about removing these without making it worse and re-spraying the whole vehicle?

Bird poo should be banded. Swirling your paint removing bird poo should result in your hands being cut off.

Polished Blish sell some special "swirl" remover. As it happens, it is called "swirl remover". You add a sachet to your bucket when you next wash. Bit like a vanish pen that the wife uses on my shirts after supper. Ok, so that is the answer you wanted to hear? McCock, time for some serious polishing...

I can just see it now... Meguiars bring a product out for everything else so why not Meguiars Bird Poo Swirl Mark Remover... £20 a bottle...

As for the respray... at this rate theres going to be a fleet of WR1's lined up for the respray... Instead of a rolling road day we will have a spray day...

actually that just sounds wrong :o

All correct, but it does happen regularly that acar starts to rust if it has been a Cat D write-off.

Don't think the anti-corrosion warranty will apply either :?

Whatever happened to that picture when you caught Spike and myself in bed together?

It's somewhere on my phone. I should download it once.

I must admit that was a bit of a surprise: walking into Spike's house at 6pm and finding you both in bed together watching TV... stark naked !

Stark naked is a "slight" stretch of the truth... However, the rest is very accurate.

6AM I could sort of understand being out on the lash and falling into bed half dressed....

but 6PM??

....WTF were 2 (however undressed) 'men' doing in bed at 6PM?

If you hadn't read through this thread and stumbled across the last couple of posts... what would you "think" the title of the thread might be?

I'd guess something like "Rust around a window" although it may be a slightly different "rust" around someone's "window"....

I think we were chattin' and chillin' ready for another night on the beer having not long come back from lunch time beers that were to help us get over the evening befores beers.

If I remember correctly I delivered champagne in bed to Spike on the same morning. Who promptly drank it and nearly made me hurl.

One was a new years party and the other was graduation party although there was a bird in the bed too

ive just been and booked my car in to get this fixed.

The bodyshop thats doing it said they see this all the time, because windscreen fitters really dont care when changing the screens and they cut through the laquer and paint with there knives and when the windscreen goes back in the paint isnt protected.

my car is booked in for the 11th of may to get fixed.

Cheers

this forum should be read buy every wr1 owner!

iv just had a look & iv got the rust above the trim aswell it looks so miner you can hardly see it but as i work for autoglass i do see this alot & it does need to be sorted out a.s.a.p. leave it & the glue that is attach to the aperature will only stick to the screen & not the aperature causing wind noise, leaking & lots of condensation in your wr1 causing mould build up in un-seen areas resulting in your car stinking like a old garage with only time curing it!

im gona be taking my screen out this wkend to see what rust build up there is & to put some primer on it to cure it. il take aload of photos & put them up on this forum when iv done.

p.s yes windscreen fitters do cut aperatures with knifes when cutting out screens thats why if you do get your screen removed/refitted make sure you use autoglass because we have banned knifes for the last year or so because of that. if you do use autoglass make sure they cut your screen out with a device called "the easy wire" it cuts from the inside with cheese wire. no scratchs on aperature or body its a very good! il show you some picks in action.

if you have any issues or questions regarding this forum please pm me il be glad to help.
