Knocking noise at pull away

Postby Scoobasteve » Thu Apr 06, 2006 5:20 pm

Guys,

Hopefully you can help.

I've noticed a small knock which seems to happen when I pull away from standstill, very noticeable if in a traffic jam with the constant stop start.

Difficult to pinpoint but seems to be coming from the rear centre (diff area) but cannot be sure.

Doesn't seem to happen when in motion but it may be disguised by road and engine noise.

Anybody ever come across this before?

Thanks in advance

Hmmm, not something i remember mine ever doing.

Is the diff in Auto when it does it?
Too petty to be a traffic warden...

Dont know if its any help, but I had something similar on a car once before and it turned out to be the rear anti-roll bar. It was held in place by 2 brackets, 1 of which had broken causing the bar to rattle around. 1 new bracket later and the problem was cured :D

Hope its something simple like for you fella.

I had this on my WR1 ... I believe it was an issue with the rear shocks. Get it down to your dealer and they'll sort it out for you.

Nb ... it was doing it on mine without me knowing for nearly 6 months and the car was fine throughout - performance and drive wise.

I think this issue is a well known and well documented one on all STis.

Hope you get it sorted dude.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

I've also noticed it if I'm doing say 20MPH in traffic and accelerate steadily.

Luckily it's a reliable issue and easy to reproduce so I'll get it checked out by the dealer.

Thanks again, top forum!

I am getting a similar thing but I would of said more like a clunking feel ( Tech term) just as I stop & then as I pull away again can feel it more just rolling back out of gear ???
Does this sound like the Shocker ??

Yes

Mine made the noise when i reversed a few metres, it starts out only on the odd ocasion, so if you take it in sods law it wont make a whisper. But after a while it will be all the time and start to P1SS you off.

New struts installed by Webbers of Basingstoke last week, problem now sorted.

Thumbs up for Webbers, no questions asked, all sorted under warranty.

Cheers :thumb:

No doubt, shocks.

The seals around the shafts of the rear shocks seem to wear out easily (tends to be noticed especially after winter)

When I replaced mine, you could actually move the shaft left and right for a millimeter or so in the housing and it made a knocking sound whereas the new ones would not move at all.

It's a known problem. Should be repaired under warranty.
