Knocking noise at pull awayGuys,
Hopefully you can help. I've noticed a small knock which seems to happen when I pull away from standstill, very noticeable if in a traffic jam with the constant stop start. Difficult to pinpoint but seems to be coming from the rear centre (diff area) but cannot be sure. Doesn't seem to happen when in motion but it may be disguised by road and engine noise. Anybody ever come across this before? Thanks in advance Steve WR1 No 364
Hmmm, not something i remember mine ever doing.
Is the diff in Auto when it does it? Too petty to be a traffic warden...
Yep, diffs is in auto.
Gear selection is fine and smooth. it's just when pulling away. Appreciate your help Rgds Steve WR1 No 364
Does it happen when you reverse.
If so its your rear shocks, mine went on the rear left hand side. dont worry its warenty work, take it in before it gets worse. Joseph
mine seems to have developed a knockbut its when i'm doing a constant speed and come on or off throttle i think it couldbe some back lash in one of the diffs but not sure, i'll get garage to check@15000 service.don't know if you've same problem but get it checked.
Dont know if its any help, but I had something similar on a car once before and it turned out to be the rear anti-roll bar. It was held in place by 2 brackets, 1 of which had broken causing the bar to rattle around. 1 new bracket later and the problem was cured
Hope its something simple like for you fella.
Re: Knocking noise at pull away
I had this on my WR1 ... I believe it was an issue with the rear shocks. Get it down to your dealer and they'll sort it out for you. Nb ... it was doing it on mine without me knowing for nearly 6 months and the car was fine throughout - performance and drive wise. I think this issue is a well known and well documented one on all STis. Hope you get it sorted dude.
Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
I've also noticed it if I'm doing say 20MPH in traffic and accelerate steadily. Luckily it's a reliable issue and easy to reproduce so I'll get it checked out by the dealer. Thanks again, top forum! Steve WR1 No 364
I am getting a similar thing but I would of said more like a clunking feel ( Tech term) just as I stop & then as I pull away again can feel it more just rolling back out of gear ???
Does this sound like the Shocker ??
Yes
Mine made the noise when i reversed a few metres, it starts out only on the odd ocasion, so if you take it in sods law it wont make a whisper. But after a while it will be all the time and start to P1SS you off. Joseph
New struts installed by Webbers of Basingstoke last week, problem now sorted.
Thumbs up for Webbers, no questions asked, all sorted under warranty. Cheers Steve WR1 No 364
My car has started doing this and it is getting worse. It's due it's 25k power check very soon so I'll get them to sort it at the same time
Thanks for the info
No doubt, shocks.
The seals around the shafts of the rear shocks seem to wear out easily (tends to be noticed especially after winter) When I replaced mine, you could actually move the shaft left and right for a millimeter or so in the housing and it made a knocking sound whereas the new ones would not move at all. It's a known problem. Should be repaired under warranty.
Mine booked in will be sorted under warranty Thanks for the replys
also anyone else try raising the back by lifting under the arch mine goes up then stays put until you drive forward ( Both sides )
I took mine in to Cheam motors today as it had similar symptoms, it turns out that the diff needs to be replaced under warranty!
Mine has now started knocking at the rear thought it was the jack moving in its slot.
But now its tight and theres still a knocking. She's need her 25k service shorty so i will have to get this sorted while she's there... The WR1oc still rocks...
Even if i do drive a Smart car!...
looks like that little bit of cornering practice you had last sun, has loosened something
She was doing it before we went mate. That why i tightned up the jack. Hoping that was what it was. I think it will be looser now though. Going to get vic to book her in today... The WR1oc still rocks...
Even if i do drive a Smart car!...
Ohh no there arnt diffrent ones are there! Garage sould know which ones i need. I hope The WR1oc still rocks...
Even if i do drive a Smart car!...
i am sure someone said that you need the upgraded ones, not our originals that are on now.
Do we know what the prob might be Is it the shocks or the brackets or somthing else The WR1oc still rocks...
Even if i do drive a Smart car!...
