Kind of true, in theory it will improve outrght grip because of the larger contact patch, increase ride comfort due to the taller sidewalls (assuming profile is same), but may not feel as tight on turn in and when cornering hard.

With wider tread the side walls will splay out a little more offering better rim protection. However, will this increase the comfort as any impact on the tyre will be directed more diagonally along the tyre wall and less vertically when I suspect the cushioning would be less? My logic can only be demonstrated with an experiment!

Think you are getting a bit deep!
wider tyre but same profile means taller sidewall. Taller sidewall means more cushioning from the tyre itself.
Think of a bed 100mm thick. and then think of an identical bed of the same material but 110mm thick. the 110mm one will take more force before you can feel the bed base.

F1 tyres seem to be quite thick (bit like me)

Seems most people dislike the F1s on here. Having said that, I doubt ALL I have tried them? I personally love them but I can only really compare them with the Pzeros and Bridgestone RE070s. You need to look at how you drive you car and where you drive it. I suspect driving style plays a role too!

As Bro says, i dont think anyone this side of Alonso is going to notice a 10mm width difference.
Just ignore us - we are being pedantic and argumentative.
The F1's are the best all round tyres for grip i have ever tried (wet and dry) The best all round tyres i have tried (handling characteristics, wear and grip combined) are the Toyo T1-R's

Hi there, I had the corsa's and there the best tyre i have ever used. But there very price and they are only good for 10-12 thousand miles. So im back on neros now. The nero and rosso tyres are fine for road use. I only swapped to the corsa's to see how good a semi slick tyre could be. As for the width i was told that there is no point paying the extra for the 235's as you would never be able to tell the difference. The extra width will only help aquaplaning in bad weather and that BAD...
The WR1oc still rocks...
Even if i do drive a Smart car!...

Anyway I've ordered some Rosso's to replace the Eagle F1s. I hope this improves the handling. I've also gone up to 235 from 225 - anyone else done this - does it matter?
I think Chris B has 235's on his motor.

This is true... Last time I spoke to Chris he was happy with his experience of the extra width. I'm sure Chris will correct me but I think the main reason he said he went for the 235s were for better rim protection...

The 888 do look good too!! If we do a track day and we like it I'll invest in a set of 888s for dry track use only.

I do have the TI-Rs on my car and they are 235s,this does seem to offer some extra rim protection, the handling seems very good too, got to go now as all this extrs width and rim protection is causing me to sweat so Iam going to lie down,at my age this talk is bad for me.

Hi chaps If i may share my experience's with tyres i have been useing Toyo T1r's and find them the best road tyre for everyday driving better than the neros by far excellent in the wet etc ! but as soon as you wana start givin it some on road or track like i do regularly they get too hot and then turn to jelly and your all over the place ! so i turned to the Toyo 888 for the trip to the Ring and Spar unfortunately we had alot of wet weather so i didnt really push them ! but drivin smoothly they were ok round Spar in the wet ! but the 2 dry Laps at the Ring i found them brilliant and since giving them a real beasting back over hear through the last few months i find the absolutely Awsome in the dry Taking roundabouts at mental speeds and there not givin an inch Fantastic, Unbeatable but there is a downside they are noisy on road cos so much rubber contacting the road and they do tramline for the same reason ! So in conclusion depending how you drive should determin your tyre's as you canot get a tyre for all conditions and driving style ! no such thing ! Myself i will run 888's for 9 months and in the winter use the T1rs for the worst weather ! in my Humble opinoin !
Always try and get to B from A very Quickly !

I would never fit wider tyres. The whole idea of 4WD back in 1980 when the Quattro came was that you could use powerful engines without the need for wide tyres that have crap grip in the rain. I know wide tyres are much better in the wet nowadays than 20 years ago and narrow tyres can handle more power. Still does stop you trying to make the best of your 4WD by combining power with narrower tyres.

Just done 600 miles in new Pirreli Rossos 235s. They are a harder ride than the Eagle F1s but feel to have more grip ( especially after 400 mile mark). They also reduce understeer.
