Noisy tyres on my WR1

I have recently bought a WR1. I am really enjoying the car and drive but have a quick question about tyres.

It is fitted with the standard alloys and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics. Once you get about 50 mph you get a really strange coasting/ rumbling noise. Sounds almost like a vibrating noise but no vibration back through the wheel. Tyres all look fine in terms of tread, balancing and tracking. Are these tyres known to cause a problem or should I be investigating something else?

Same mileage as mine, I haven't tried those tyres but there is certainly no noise from mine with Pzero Neros on.

Like Spike said, wheel bearings sound logical! The only other sound noise I remember was the worn struts on the rear but this was noticeable at lower speeds, not 50mph.

Stupid question, but everything is "tight" isn't it? Checked all your wheel nuts for example? One guy on here visited a "red coloured garage with a line in it" and they "forgot" to tighten the nuts :nono:

I have the Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetrics fitted all round on my WR1 and Ive not noticed any increased noise level over the previous set or tyres?

Thanks for all the comments. Having visited a garage I can now add the following:

Wheel nuts are definitely tight!

No obvious play in the wheels or suspension (would seem to rule out bearing or suspension problems)

Rear struts replaced at the back about 10K ago.

Switching the front and rear wheels makes no difference.

Happens in any gear

Noise seems to increase if you turn the wheels to the left or right.

Definitely not the flat four rumble (which I love!)

????? :(

I suggest a phone call to the garage and advise them that ....

"the flux capacitor is whining"

I am sure they will be able to resolve it, failing that call "the doc"..I hear he is a whizz with them.

Thanks for the further comments.

I took the car down to Kwikfit this afternoon and asked that they check the Flux Capacitor for me. The first guy was obviously just the saturday boy as he didn't have a clue what I was on about and just sniggered. A few minutes later an older guy came out from the back and said for £100 cash he would check the Flux Capacitor for me (I never knew Kwikfit produced a radiation suit with their logo on it- for tax reasons I guess?) Anyway about 10 minutes later he came back with streaming eyes and told me he had given it a good service and hopefully things should be sorted.

If it didn't sort it he said I should go back next week and he will put some Dilithium crystals in the petrol tank. He showed me the special crystals which thin the fuel - they come in a paper bag with a big 'Tate and Lyle' logo on the side. As a valued customer he would only charge another £100 for this service.

And who said customer service was dead these days?

Does the noise go when the brakes are pressed? Could be a sticking caliper slightly pressing the pad on the disc.

Thanks for all your replies.

Following a visit to the local tyre centre and another garage the cause seems highly likely to be a buckled alloy. How easy is it going to be to buy a single Alloy for a WR1?

He wasn't actually selling it, he was giving it away if you picked it up.
Just been over to collect it, very nice bloke, ex WR1 owner.

I'm the new owner of a free WR1 wheel in very good condition,
:D

sorry mate. :(

Thanks for the replies so far.

I hope I am lucky enough to find a free alloy- I didn't realise things like that happened! :D

Never heard of it happening before to be honest.

To be fair to the guy who gave it to me I'm not selling it as he could have done that quite easy, doesn't seem right to pick it up and just sell it on.

I'm getting it refurbed (powdercoated) with my other four old original ones to act as the spare for that set, possibly in a different colour to original.

As I said there are always some on e-bay.

Thanks for the EBay link. Is that the right colour for the WR1 wheels? I haven't got my head round all the different finishes yet!

Thanks
