Dunc, turns out I actually had a VF34 on mine after my run around with Subaru!! I know mine has gone now but when I did some research on it, I read that the VF34 spooled slightly quicker than the VF35 and had better top end on them? Is that your understanding of the VF34 v VF35?
VF35 is slightly quicker spooling because it has a smaller exhaust housing, but the VF34 is roller bearing so it may be slightly more responsive although laggier (sounds daft). The VF34 has more theoretical top end available but I have mapped VF35's to 350-365 bhp - dont see many VF34's making that power tbh. Duncan : www.racedynamix.com

Long story in my case but basically they replaced the engine under warranty under the previous owner and then I bought the car. When I took it to a rolling road it was about 265bhp and nobody could figure out why... realised the turbo on there was a TD04L and I paid for a VF35 to be put on but couldn't get the VF35.... they had a VF34 so I had that fitted instead. Subaru said that when they replaced the engine they put the same turbo back on.... so my question to Subaru was how the fook did a TD04L get on an STi in the first place?? I can only think of 2 scenarios, the first being that some technician hoped nobody would notice and swapped it.. secondly, they genuinely put a wrong turbo back on... either way, it was under warranty so it was defo a Subaru 'cock up'. Conclusion, they are either liars or fookwitts...
When you realised it had the wrong turbo and paid for a replacement turbo to be added didnt you think at the time.. what if i stick an even bigger turbo on it instead of the standard one?
Yer but I just wanted a standard WR1 (mainly for insurance reasons)... would I need to have it remapped if I put a bigger turbo on? I didn't want to pay another £500 for re-mapping at the time... had already cost me a small fortune!!
Well it didn't need mapped for the smaller turbo as you said it was running fine on the rollers, I think the VF35 is quite laggy so i can imagine a bigger turbo being worse unless you get a hybrid, Focus ST's rule!!!
yer it would no doubt need another remap with a bigger turbo...
and foley - who cares about lag if you get more POWER in the end
Yeah it would need remapping for the bigger turbo as it will be going into areas of the map untried by the previous small on. if you have already paid for the initial remap then tweaks to accommodate changes would be much less. I dont know who did your initial map but I charge £350 for the first map then map changes such as that generally are around £100-£150. Bigger turbo doesnt always mean laggier. Turbo designs have come a long way in the last 10 years since the VF35 came out and it is possible to have the best of both worlds. Duncan : www.racedynamix.com
