i dont know what your hoping to hear really! only thing i can suggest is checking the gearbox oil ( doubt it will help tbh )
other than that gearbox unfortunately..
The 6 speed wr1 box is very robust. It sounds like the synchro has gone between 5th and 6th. Does it do it changing down from 6th to 5th as well?
Is it at a set RPM when you change from 5th to 6th? My WR1 crunches changing 3rd to 4th gear at around 6,000 to 6200rpm. Subaru quote 1500-2000 notes to refurbish your gearbox. Mine is also quite whiney compared to others. Since I got my WR1 3-4yrs ago I said when it goes I will get it refurbed. 3-4yrs down the line the car still crunches at that rpm but the gearbox is fine even with over 400bhp thrown at it and 40k later. I just avoid the RPM where it crunches which is quite easy with 400bhp as the car revs right to the redline now so no need to change so soon cheers Mega
Same here, I get a slight crunch 3rd to 4th usually after a spell of hard driving. Only happens when the gearbox must be really hot. Never caused a problem, and a slower change seems to stop it.
I found the standard WR1 with its map, the power died off towards the end of the rev range in third so changing at this point caused the crunch. Remapping it then modifying it both sorted out the power dieing off so not needed to change as early now
Had to convince the wife somehow that a 350 quid remap was better than 1500 quid refurb of the gearbox
The car has just had a full service at Subaru so no not an oil problem...............Thats really interesting Mega as yes it does seem to be at a certain RPM when giving it some beans. And only into 6th from 5th. Not 6th to 5th and rest is smooth to change. O well glad it aint just me then!
Do you get into 6th gear at Brutingthorpe?? Or is it 3rd all the way round at 4500 RPM!!! Last edited by Cozzy 481 on Mon Jul 18, 2011 9:59 pm, edited 1 time in total.

quote of the day
Okay well it sounds like the same issue as mine the synchro mesh or whatever its called between gears 5 and 6 is on its way out causing the crunch, solution is a 1500 quid refurb or a 350 remap I Just about get into 6th gear at brunters altho not been with 440 horses under the bonnet before so should get a bit faster this time. The problem is we get 3/4 of the length of the straight instead of the full straight due to the truck driving people so never get to max the car out. The standard car will certainly go to around 130mph in 5th before you need to slam on the anchors. After fitting AP Brakes I got an extra 10mph out of it so 140ish in standard form. Depends how aggressive you are being I suppose My standard car did 55miles /48 laps to the tank of fuel one year so dred to think how many laps I will get this year
