TYRE WEAR

Postby GPWR1 » Sun May 21, 2006 7:08 pm

The two front tyres on my merc are wearing on the outer edge, more so on the nearside tyre, had the tracking checked , the dealer said everthing is ok. I've been told to increase the tyre pressure and this should sort it, Has anyone had a similar problem and cured it this way.

Very much possible

The shoulders of the tyres will wear more if you run on a reasonably low pressure.
Similar, the centre will wear more if you run a reasonably high pressure.

The outside of the tyre will wear more, especially if the pressure is pretty low, as this is the bit that is providing most of the grip when cornering.

Simple principle in fact.
If you look at asymmetric tyres, the inside will be designed to provide more longitudinal grip as, when a car accelerates, this is the part that is being pushed onto the tarmac.
The outside of the tyres is designed to provide latitudinal grip as this bit is undergoing most of the strain when cornering.

In summary, if the outside is wearing more than the inside, it means you're cornerning more then you are accelerating.

You need more power !!

Which Merc are you driving ?

My old E-classes were pretty OK on tyre wear, but my S seems to eat his Michelins faster than the scoob does

This one is my fourth and probably final merc its a 280cdi E class .
Took delivery of the first one August last year within 200 miles and 3days had to be recovered to my dealership , an ecu problem was diagnosed and they couldn't get parts for 6 weeks. So i rejected that car with loads of grief they eventually gave in and replaced it .
Had this one delivered November 2005, its performed well so far apart from a bit of a tyre issue.

Merc UK is just a DISASTER !

Mercedes has a customer promise they will deliver ANY part anywhere within 24h.

Only place they do not promise this, is in the UK...

Merc dealers are jumped up tossers too. Twice I have seriously been looking a Mercs at a main dealer and I have ended up walking out because of the poor judgemental service provided by the sales staff.
