You can only be excused if you bought a 911 GT3 RS. Anything else and you've let yourself down and you've let the club down

The 996 turbo is the one to go for when going for a porsche, with some not cheap modifications you can get them up to just under 700bhp if you have a google around. That would be serious power in a car like the 911 and most scoobys wouldnt stand a chance against one. When you pick it up come take me for a spin so i can see how it compares to the wr1

thanks for the nice feedback
unfortunatly its a 996 c4s with a factory aero kit, i did try a few turbos but to get a good one i could not justify the money on a sunday toy.
they are out there and even an x50 (500BHP) but they were very rough, so went for a clean low mileage c4s.
from a set of lights or down a twisty back lane a standard wr1 would have overall advantage as its no way as sharp, but coming out of a slower corner the 911 just fires out and keeps going and recon passed 120 the 911 would have the legs.
they are both great cars and will always love the subaru for its noise and turbo rush

I drove the 996 Turbo on a track day and thought it was slower than the WR1 but I don't know whether this was because the twin turbos meant less lag and it was pure torque all the way... compared to the WR1 which is lag lag lag and then you are in the boot
I'd agree that above 100-110+ the porker would have the legs on the standard WR1.

WR1 is after all based on a rally car designed to get from 0-60 fast and not a top speed monster

Dont want to be a scaremonger, but I was seriously considering a 996 c4s until I saw this !
With my luck of engine failure ....thought otherwise.
Although I suspect you have done your reseach on 996 issues
Found this on Total 911
"All 996 engines have an intermediate shaft that runs the length of the underside of the block and is chain-driven from the crankshaft. This, in turn, drives the twin camshafts on each bank of cylinders. At the end of this is a sprocket which turns on a bearing. The sprocket is retained by a small stud that can break, causing the bearing to fail. At first, this manifests itself as a noisy rattle, which turns into a death rattle as the cam chain come off, leading to further internal damage."
Also found this else but cant find web page...from memory Basically regarding same sealed bearing, which says "ims" bearing will possibly run dry over a time, causing bearing breakup resulting in major engine failure, especially low milage 996's which have been driven carefully, but 996's which have been driven harder(trackdays etc) will get engine splash which coats the bearing in oil which will prolong engine life.

My mate was about to buy one and told me he found out the same as this and stayed clear. It isn't all though, I think it is a certain engine model...?

thats why i got a turbo, also the gt2 and gt3 dont suffer from this as they have reinforced ones instead of the ones they put in all other 996's, 997's also suffer with same problem, have seen both seals at garage i got mine from, and was shown by one of the mechanics how they work.

It does seem to be across the board with 996/997 c2/c4's, 3.2's to early 3.6 997's, the later 997 3.8's are supposed to have a complete new engine design !
As Stijoy says gt2/3's turbo are ok.
But I will ponit out there are thousands 996/997 owners out there who have had trouble free motoring, myself on the otherhand seems to be jinxed
