Destination 400 bhp! #481Hi WR1 People,
I going to bite the bullet and get my baby sorted. I want to get her up around the 400 bhp area. I know you guys have answered a million questions before on this subject and I have read back through the threads and done some research. As far as Im aware and been told the Wr1 standard block engine is good for 400. I would need to change the Turbo. Also upgrade the headers and fit de cat exhaust. Lager Injectors and then maybe a FMIC. Im aware that the TMIC will be ok but may suffer heat soak so its best to change to FMIC for optimal performance (Adam told me that (autotecnia). (I will be chosing the Blitz Nur Spec exhaust mated with the RCM Header i bought from Chris at the McRae meet last year) So my question is what parts are best in your experience and any advice will be very welcome. This is my project for this year and i will keep you all updated as it progresses via this thread. Just to give you spec of car at present; BC Coilovers all round Green panel air filter RaceDynamics remap Exedy Organic clutch Performance Friction front discs and upgraded pads front and back. (Stops well) Afterburner backbox Cusco front brace Samco silicone coolant hoses Dyno printout for 337 bhp at flywheel. Always run on Shell V power. Oil has been changed every 3000 miles. I Look forward to the journey! Regards Dave Last edited by Cozzy 481 on Fri Mar 02, 2012 9:17 am, edited 1 time in total.

IMO there are far better performing exhausts than the Blitz, unless you simply want if to make a noise...........
not sure what "lager pistons" are for??? ASPerformance

Sorry thats my mistake I meant Injectors
Thread edited now. Yes it is the noise but please give me your views on the one you recommend and youve had good results with. Im told the Blitz or the RCM are the ones? Dave Bmw 320ci msport

Yeah blitz exhaust is loud and cool, and I wanted one initially, but in the end, I bought a cheap second hand one off scoobynet. It cost me £150. Yeah, if I wanted cats and things, I would spend much more for the quality etc. But for what is (essentially a piece of 3" pipe), I find the blitz one is maybe a bit pricey, and your just paying for the name really. Others on here may have different opinions
the Blitz (all IMO of course) is simply an expenbsive drain pipe and doesn't actually work correctly in terms of exhaust gas flow.........
the other things are its expensive and extremely loud (which may be of concern or not) for a far better soloution fit a Milltek, job done......... ASPerformance

Also bear in mind with those headers you lose the burble once in boost, wouldn't know how a Blitz would sound with that set up?
Good luck buddy, sounds mint!!
Been toying with a new zorst and speaking with Pro-R crew, miltek all the way for them
I purchased a Miltek zorst for an RS4 from Alyn. As always Alyn provides a superb service. My zorst has valves which started to rattle. Alyn sorted it out with Miltek to fix the problem and to be fair to Miltek they couldn't help enough when my wife went to their unit.
Your wife has exhausts? Do tell... [Just incase this gets lost in translation, I am not slandering you, I know people can be sensitive to these harsh words.]
Poorly worded I know. I was never top of the class at school.
Re: Destination 400 bhp! #481
Hi Dave, Sounds exciting! When you get to big power you need the car to breathe easily. Correct headers (GT Spec2), flow matched up and down pipes and a good flowing exhaust system are essential. Exhaust systems I considered were: Miltek RCM Revolution247 Some people get away with standard injectors but they are apparently right on the limit at 400bhp so going to 650 or higher is recommended. The next thing you need to do is some research on is which turbo you want to go for. Turbos vary massively despite appearing to be the same on paper. A TD05 20G, MD321H, RCM400, SC42 all seem to do the same on paper but spool and deliver their power very differently. Standard airbox can shift a lot of air so its not always necessary to upgrade this to an induction kit, but some people like the noise from the engine when doing it. Intercoolers are a dark art. If you go for FMIC you have much longer pipe work leading to more lag but once you are going much better cooling that then TMIC. The TMIC will function up to 400BHP but at slower speeds does suffer from heat soak. If you do track work then a FMIC would be recommended to ensure your car goes on and comes off the track at the same power level. IC Spray is a waste of space in my opinion as even when you cake the TMIC with 7-8 back to back sprays, your inlet temps only go down 1 degree or so. Getting a set of gauges on a modified car is always wise to monitor what is going on especially as oil and water temps can run a lot higher than normal. So consider getting a thermostatically controlled oil cooler kit. Avoid the cheaper ones without thermostats as running oil too cold can have a negative affect too. Oil catch can, fuel pressure reg are recommended but not essential. Suggest you try to get all your parts from 1 or 2 places at most and get one garage to fit them all and manage the whole build for you including the remap so you havent got tuners blaming each other. Personally I can recommend Adam in Buxton, he has done a cracking job on my car and has jumped on any queries or teething issues so am very impressed. If money were no object you would get RCM to do the whole job but be prepared to double if not tripple your costs. Avoid using HarveySmith on scoobynet for any work as his work was a disgrace on my car. I paid for things that never actually got installed on my car (oil catch can). When I went to his house to collect my car after the work had been done he revealed he only took bank transfers or cash and refused to give me my keys to my car until payment had been made in full after id been told by him to get the train up to collect the car. If this aggressive attitude wasn't enough his after sales attitude stinks and normally involves in slagging off on the phone then hanging up if you question anything he says diplomatically. Last thing you need to do is prepare some cheek exercises as you will be sore from all the grinning
Tanx lads some great advice already regarding the exhaust issue. And priceless advice from Megaman. Tanx mate, keep you posted.

OK this is is my new spec at present having spoke to some people that know far more than i ever will;
RCM Headers. Full Milltek Zorst with sports cat.( Thanks for advice lads) Deatchwerks fuel pump. Enlarged Injectors. FMIC with Perrin or K&N air filter. SC42 Billet Turbo. Remap (All works done in house inc mapping) Please feel free to advise me further if you think you have had better results with other makes. I only want to do this once (That was a nervous laugh you just heard) Hopeful the works will start in May or June. I have contacted Alan Jefferys 'The Engine Tuner' located in Plymouth. Its easier for me to get to being South england. He has an excellent reputation and has great facilities inc in house Mapping/rolling road. He writes for The Impraza Magazine every month you may have read his articles which are quite funny! Dave Bmw 320ci msport

Sounds good.
Which FMIC are you looking to get? A full Decat with silencer will offer better power gains but obviously would have MOT issues. Who is going to do the work?
Hi Mega,
Ive contacted Alan Jefferys 'The Engine Tuner' guy who writes for the Impreza Magazine. He comes highly recommended and has a great set up down in Plymouth with in house rolling road and mapping. Very knowledgable, his son takes care of the Subaru side of things and has done lots of these Mods before. This keeps it all under one umbrella so to speak. Its a little easier for me to get down to them rather than head north to Adam etc. http://www.enginetuner.co.uk/about_us.htm In regards to the FMIC i am open to advice on whats best as thats the only part i havent discussed with Alan. Is yours FMIC? What one you got if so? Cant wait to get it done. Going Australia for a month in April otherwise it would be sooner. Aiming for May / June. Bmw 320ci msport

Hi Cozy .. Liking the 400 plus Aim .. They should of been this out of the factory as Standard IMOI
But if you join for 400 plus id go for RCM 400/420 or A SC billet Turbo and sell your standard turbo Bigger injectors 600/800cc as you can sell your pinks for 150 Sx Fuel pressure Reg Decent de cat 3" zorst sell your old one front mount .. APS one or Hyperflow Modified oil pump Oil cooler .. if your goin to do any track work always over kill on modifying mine made 420 on 1.6 bar and 1.8 bar 460 .. was running this for 2 years .. until i sold the engine .. Then you goto choose who map's it ... =-) "666"

Hey Cozzy...
Nice plans and defo the right way to go. One thing I would add though, if you are in Oz...then try pick up some stuff down there...especially the Hyperflow rad. Much cheaper down there and some quality stuff about too.
Caveman, Thanks for that! Hadnt occured to me to be on the look out for stuff there. They love their Scobbies out in Oz. They would love the WR1's. Car prices in Oz are ridiculus, A good condition used STI on say an 08 Plate is around the 40k to 50k mark!! I saw a BMW 335 Convertible on an 08 Plate for 110k (Im talking Aussie Dollar here before you all export your WR1's). If we ever migrate mines coming with me!! Exchange rate is appalling at mo........$1.45 to the £ !! Its been at $2.5 in the past!

Hired the V6 Falcon on this visit!!

Why does that matter, I didnt think there were any corners in Oz?
Hi Cozzy. Just wanted to let you know that Martin Jeffries remapped mine some years ago (added 40bhp) Kept the boost as standard. It's done 20K miles since then and I called at their stand at one of the shows last summer to report how well it runs and appreciated the 'little fixes' he gave it in the timing and fueling dept to give me pops and bangs every day controlled simply by your right foot and a sharp ear !
Just ask him !
Thanks Mick,
Its nice to hear that they gave a good service to you. They do know there stuff (as do many others). The thing that attracted me down there was the fact that they do the build and they Mapp it all under one umbrella. I am well aware that any type of this work carries a risk element, but if you use a good firm then you minimise it I suppose. I mean if price was no object then we would all be up at RCM! Sadly with 3 Kids...A Wifey who likes shopping....House...Holidays...etc that aint an option. Im sure Alan and Co is equally as through in there work. Will keep you posted on the progress.
